Design Details

Client bought his ideal detached home and wanted to add value to the asset by maximising its potential in all directions and improve/enhance the lives of its occupants by implementing a flexible design which would meet the needs of a large family consisting of different age groups and lifestyle.

The client brief requested for modern kitchen-dining area, granny room with DDA toilet and spacious living lounge on ground floor . The 1st floor had to provide spacious bedrooms with family bathroom surrounded with central spiral staircase leading to the upper 2nd floor loft room and 2nd floor it had have ensuite bathroom with spacious large room.

To meet the design brief the strategic solution was to lower the floor on 1/2 floor and omit the existing roof and replace it by room within roof design roof to provide sufficient head height to 2nd floor.

By replacing the existing staircase with a new DDA accessible staircase it allowed to create spacious bathroom and bedrooms and allow to place the spiral staircase central to the house with natural light bought down via the roof velux.

The design aims to find a balance between the pleasure and ordinariness and everyday things and a sincere enquiry into the nature of architectural form, typology and expression. The materials specified are commonly available, however the client wanted to increase value of the asset and invested in material to express quality of the build.

Planning & building application was obtained and developer took the role of a project manager to convert the house himself.

The challenge was was produce all information and obtain statutory consent under tight timescales and we achieved project success as the client was able to start construction at the agreed time.
